History

The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) was founded in 1971 by integrating the Higher Technical Schools that were part of the Higher Polytechnic Institute. The following year, the University Schools joined the institution. However, the origins of the UPM go back to much older times. The teachings of most of the Centers were implanted during the reign of Carlos III, in the 18th century.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the School of Civil Engineers, Canals and Ports was founded (1802) thanks to the initiative of Agustín de Bethencourt. This demonstrates the restless and investigative spirit of the Spanish Enlightenment of the time. During that same century, the Schools of Forestry Engineers and Agricultural Engineers were created. Today they are based in the Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid, like the one in Caminos. Also that of Industrial Engineers, located next to Paseo de la Castellana.

In the 20th century, three other Higher Schools were founded:

  • Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineers
  • Higher Technical School of Aeronautical Engineers (today Higher Technical School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering)
  • Higher Technical School of Engineers in Topography, Geodesy and Cartography

These were joined by the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences-INEF, in Ciudad Universitaria, and the Faculty of Informatics (now the Higher Technical School of Computer Engineering) on the Montegancedo Campus.

Throughout its history, the UPM has evolved and grown, becoming a benchmark institution in the field of technical education and research in Spain.
